Talented artist chooses Seaford for shrine to goddess of memory

Mnemosyne - the Greek Goddess of Memory

A Sussex artist is set to make waves in Seaford next month with a thought-provoking ‘offering’ to Mnemosyne - the Greek Goddess of Memory.

Athena Jane Churchill will be weaving her magic to create an atmospheric shrine called ‘Re:remembering -  An Offering to Mnemosyne’  in the Crypt Gallery Undercroft in Church Street, Seaford. This new project represents a journey into the labyrinth of memory.

The display opens on Jane’s birthday Saturday 15th and can be visited until Friday 21st September 2018.  Mnemosyne was one of the oldest goddesses in Greek mythology, best known for having given birth to the nine muses - goddesses of the arts.

Athena Jane, from Laughton near Lewes, creates installations and imaginary worlds, bringing together strands of her work in theatre set design, visual art installation, making and curating. Her work invites viewers to step into a world between the real and the imagined and journey within. Inspired by and exploring the relationship between museum collection, archive and created artefacts, her work reflects her fascination with traces of memory in heritage objects, myths and ancient devotional sites.

Jane explains: “I love being creative in the flow of new ideas and projects. I make my art in a large variety of media to express my inner worlds and visions and bring them into reality. As an artist I express in many different 2 and 3D media my belief of the possibilities of each unique human imagination, the beauty of the world, and the magical and transformational process of living.”

Her last project, ‘Degrees of Separation’, spanning seven years of artwork, culminated in an exhibition ‘Echoes Across the Century’ at the Guildhall Art Gallery in London last year.

Opening times vary: Opening Viewing Saturday 15th September 2018 6pm-8pm then Sunday 16th September 11am-4pm. Monday 17th to Thursday 20th September 10am-5pm. Friday 21st open 10am- 1pm only. Entry is free to Arts@theCrypt, Crypt Gallery, 23 Church St, Seaford BN25 1HD www.thecryptgallery.com
