Many people dream of living in a castle but the second best thing is living next door to one with access to the building and its extensive grounds.

A unique and rare building plot has gone on the market that could allow the owner, subject to planning permission, to build a beautiful, comfortable home near to historic Grade II* listed Chiddingstone Castle in Kent.

Dr Robert Wickham, Senior Partner at agents for the site Ibbett Mosely, explains: “While many people have a romantic dream of living in a castle the realities can be quite different with the cost of upkeep and heating. Building and living in a beautifully designed house on a plot like the one in Chiddingstone offers a better and more realistic option for most people.”

Chiddingstone Castle, near Edenbridge, has developed from the original Tudor building through various alterations into the castle so well known today Chiddingstone Castle. In the 1500s a Tudor timber framed property occupied part of the main site but in the 1670s it was rebuilt in the Restoration style and known as High Street House or High Street Mansion.

An eclectic mix of people have lived in the castle including the Streatfeild family, Lord Astor and the collector Denys Eyre Bower. During the Second World War it hosted members of the Canadian Forces before becoming a school in 1954.

The castle was purchased in 1955 by Mr Denys Eyre Bower to display his collection of antiques. Since his death in 1977, the castle and its 35 acres of grounds have been held in trust for the nation by the Denys Eyre Bower Bequest and both are open to the public. The trust continues to care for the castle and Bower’s collections which include objects from Japan, Ancient Egypt and the Stuart and Jacobite period. The museum is internationally important as a centre for the study of Egyptian and Middle Eastern History. 

The ¾ acre building plot at Chiddingstone Castle is currently occupied by a timber lodge building and a large storage building.

To obtain planning consent the new house must blend in appropriately to meet the requirements of the trustees responsible for upkeep of Chiddingstone Castle. The Trustees have been advised by their planning consultants, Howard Sharp and Partners, on the appropriate approach to the application.  The site is located close to the Grade II* listed Chiddingstone Castle and to the west is a further listed building Tye Hall.  It is set within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Metropolitan Green Belt and the Chiddingstone Conservation Area.
