The day I became a keynote speaker

Recently I had the pleasure of being invited to be the keynote speaker at Cleankill Pest Control’s bi-annual staff conference. My presentation included an overview of my career and a look at how everyone in a company has a role to play in generating brand awareness. It was fun to look back and share some of my favourite coverage and this was a great opportunity to meet everyone in Cleankill in one place and at one time.  

The icing on the cake was getting to stay at Rhinefield House Hotel. The setting was amazing – surrounded by huge trees and on the edge of the New Forest – and the food was beautiful too. I also got to take part in the Crystal Maze team building exercises run by Seriously Cool Events. These were really fun, and they gave me at great opportunity to bond with the staff in my team. I was delighted when we finished third!

I have been working with Cleankill Pest Control for around eight years – in fact they were one of my first clients after I braved it and left the relatively safe and secure world of in-house PR. I strongly believe that everything in life happens for a reason and it was a happy coincidence that I attended the Let’s Do Business exhibition in Eastbourne that very first year and bumped into Cleankill.

The Cleankill directors and many of the staff previously worked for Rentokil – leaving to join a company with a different ethos and a special focus on customer service. In a previous life, I had also worked for Rentokil, as the UK PR Manager, but I hadn’t seen Paul and his team for a good ten years after leaving to work in Local Government. It was serendipity. I needed to secure some clients to keep the wolves from the door and Cleankill wanted to generate awareness of its brand and differentiate itself from the competition.

Managing Director Paul Bates asked me to write a proposal and we started working together not long after. Since then it has been an amazing journey and I have seen the company grow and prosper. It is great working with a company you truly believe does excellent work. From my perspective, we never have any difficulties coming up with interesting content for social media, press releases and award entries. As part of the plan to raise Cleankill’s profile, we have worked on several award entries and I’m pleased to say they have won many well-deserved awards.  

Pest controllers are a unique species – great fun to work with and they all have a wicked sense of humour. The client relationship I have with them is very special. They have been amazingly kind to me and made me feel like part of the Cleankill family. I am trusted with all manner of information and feel that my work is really appreciated. It’s the perfect business relationship – and I get paid to do something I love for people I really admire...you can’t say fairer than that!
